What is Ozone and how does it work?

1.)    Ozone is simply a tri-atomic oxygen particle and is just as safe as oxygen when used properly.

2.)    Ozone is negatively charged and by nature looks to neutralize anything with a positive charge. Bad cells in our body typically carry positive charges on their cell membrane. Good cells will typically have anti-oxidants on their cell membranes and will deter surface oxygenation. Bad cells will attract the ozone particle looking to neutralize its charge and the ozone will perforate the cell membrane and destroy it, thus destroying the “bad” cell.  These “bad” cells can be bacteria, viruses, cancer cells or free radicals.

3.)    Ozone is created using medical-grade pure oxygen and passing it through a corona discharge generator, creating pure O3 or ozone. Ozone in the atmosphere is contaminated with nitrogen and can be harmful, but pure ozone can be very therapeutic and support life and all life processes. Ozone in the atmosphere starts as O3, but will quickly bind with atmospheric pollutants. This is the job of ozone, to be nature's filter of bad particles.

4.)    Once ozone is created, it can be used in a liquid form (ozonated water), a gas form, or filtered through pure olive oil and forms a thick clear ointment (ozonated olive oil).

What can Ozone be used for in dentistry?

1.)    Periodontal disease - Ozone can be used to help treat periodontal disease by using ozone water flushes below the gum line and/or ozone gas infiltrated into the gum tissue and supporting tissues.

2.)    Root canals - Ozone is used in all forms during root canal treatment to kill bacteria, sterilize all bacteria in the canal system and to stimulate faster healing. As a gas, ozone can get to places traditional liquids can’t because the gas can permeate the tiny tubules that cannot otherwise be accessed, thereby getting a truly sterile, bacteria free root canal system, before sealing the canals.

3.)    Decay – Ozone can be used to kill decay causing bacteria. Since ozone is a gas, it can permeate into areas below the gum line, into the grooves of teeth and over the smooth surfaces of the teeth and will kill bacteria on contact. If the decayed area is not too deep, then no restoration may be needed at all. If the area of decay is cavitated and the bacteria is killed, then a filling can be placed often times with no need for numbing. The resulting tooth structure that has been treated with ozone is stronger than what was there before.

4.)    Surface disinfections and water line disinfections – Ozone is 3,000-10,000 times more potent than typically used chlorinated products, and it kills bacteria, viruses and fungi 3,500 times faster without the harmful residues of chlorine. Therefore, we use Ozone to treat all of our hard surfaces for maximum disinfections and sterilization.

5.)    Ozone has the ability to increase oxygen levels in the body. It has been used in other countries for health purposes and for killing cancer cells. Some countries use ozone as standard therapy in treating cancer.

6.)    Ozone does not have any negative side effects with other medications, therefore cross-reactions are not a concern at all. You cannot be allergic to Ozone, because you cannot be allergic to oxygen.

7.)    Ozone accelerates the production of good cells and kills bad cells.

8.)    Dr. Brennan is part of a National IRB (Institutional Review Board). This IRB is a joint effort among several dentists in the US to research various clinical applications to broaden its use. It is a part of a nationally funded research grant. Ozone use has been accredited by the AGD (Academy of General Dentistry). It’s one of the most difficult forms of accreditation. Ozone is extremely safe.

9.)    180,000 deaths a year are attributed to health care provider’s therapy. Ozone has no ill side effects. Ozone is a supercharged oxygen and helps to support life.
